Under $100 / North America

Birmingham is the most populous city in Alabama. The city features plenty of historical and outdoor activities to take part in during your stay.

Start your day at Big Bad Breakfast. This modern, diner-style spot features breakfast classics with a Southern spin, including fried chicken biscuits and breakfast skillets. Breakfast costs $10–15. After your meal, stroll through the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The 67.5-acre property boasts more than 30 gardens in three styles: Gardens of Collections, Gardens of Nature and Gardens of Culture. Open daily, admission and parking is free.

Enjoy multiregional Mexican cuisine at El Barrio Restaurante y Bar. The quirky spot offers Mexican dishes with a Southern twist, like the chorizo meatloaf, and is closed Sunday and Monday. Spend about $15.

Visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. The museum and research center focuses on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s. Adult admission costs $15. Check the website for discounts. The museum is closed on Monday.

Have dinner at James Beard Award-nominated Highlands Bar and Grill. A favorite among locals, the menu changes frequently to highlight the best seasonal, fresh ingredients. Entrees start at $28.

End your night with a few beers at Avondale Brewing Company. Throughout the years, the building has been home to many businesses, including a saloon, brothel, bank, firehouse and post office. Today, the brewery serves up a variety of year-round and seasonal brews from its taproom. Spend less than $10.
