SONATI is a Nicaragua-based NGO that works to provide environmental education for children around the country.
Given that environmental awareness is typically low in developing countries, organizations such as SONATI can make a huge difference by educating the next generation of decision makers. By the end of 2014, SONATI had given classes to 60,000 children, and 944 hectares of forest were under the protection of the organization and affiliated communities.
As a volunteer you will be able to help SONATI prevent further environmental damage being caused unwittingly. The main areas of concern are waste management, deforestation, climate change and the protection of wild animals.
Volunteers with specific skills relevant to those areas are encouraged to apply, but there are a number of other non-specific tasks. SONATI runs a number of hostels and a tour company offering treks throughout the country, and volunteers are needed to run both parts of the organization.
Leading tours is an especially great volunteer gig, as you’ll get to see the spectacular landscapes of Nicaragua in return for your time. That said, all volunteers are given free trips as a thank you for their commitment. Additionally there is no charge for the volunteer programs. SONATI is an organization in genuine need of a helping hand, and is not trying to profit from the good intentions of visitors.
Check out the SONATI website and, if you want to apply, send a CV and cover letter to info@sonati.org.
