No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.

Hit the Trails
Hiking and mountain biking will fill your days. You have plenty of options, including at Morro Bay State Park, Sweet Springs Nature Preserve and Morro Dune Ecological Reserve. Black Hill Trail is also a popular pick. Just be sure to check park and venue regulations before busting out the mountain bike; some areas are more suitable for exploring on foot.
Take a Whale-Watching Tour
If you’d rather see the sights from the water, take a guided whale-watching tour from one of the local providers to spot gray whales, humpbacks and orcas, depending on the time of year.
