The second annual Juneteenth Foodways Festival kicks off in Indianapolis June 16. The free festival takes place at the Benjamin Harris Presidential site, with a nod to Chef Dolly Johnson, the first Black chef at the White House, hired by President Harris in the late 1800s.
The festival brings together more than 30 regional Black-owned restaurants and similar vendors, offering menu items reflecting Black foodways throughout American history. In addition to taste-testing your way through these vendors’ amazing eats, you can also enjoy historical reenactments and check out the festival’s retail partners and vendors, cooking demonstrations, and tours of the Benjamin Harris Presidential site.
While the event is free, tickets are still required. Additionally, early-access tickets are available for a minimal fee.
Not planning to be in Indianapolis in mid-June? Whenever you visit, be sure to check out the presidential site, including its current special exhibit No Compact of Silence: Black Civil Rights Advocates in the Harrison Era. The site is open daily and special events occur throughout the year, ranging from theatrical performances to curator-led events, all of which give you an in-depth look at the site and its collection.
