Trends / Adventure

Women who live for adrenaline-pumping travel may find it difficult to find vacation companions if their friends tend to opt for more relaxing getaways. In response to this potential problem, two women created a travel network for fellow females who prefer high-thrill adventure travel over days spent lazing on a beach.

WHOA (which stands for Women High on Adventure) is a place for women to celebrate their love of travel, connect with other like-minded travelers and even embark on pre-planned group trips around the world. WHOA offers both group and private adventures, welcoming solo travelers who are eager to meet other women as well as small groups of friends who prefer to have someone else plan every step of their journey. Adventure trips include hiking Mount Kilimanjaro or the peaks of Machu Picchu in Peru; camel-riding and culture immersion in India; and hiking and paragliding through the Bavarian Alps, with a final stop at Munich’s Oktoberfest celebration. More adventurous activities include a two-week hike through the Himalayas to Mount Everest Base Camp.

WHOA touts itself as a “boutique” travel company that not only offers adventures for women but also allows women who participate in each excursion to give back to the local community of women. Over the years, WHOA has raised $15,000 for worldwide women’s programs, and trip participants spend part of their on-site time volunteering with local causes.
