Chautauqua Institution is a unique destination in western New York, which, every summer, hosts thousands of visitors who flock to the expansive grounds to attend a variety of programming all designed with “self and community betterment” in mind. Chautauqua Institution is nothing new; it was founded in the 1870s to provide wealthy Americans a more constructive and educational way to use their leisure time, and, this year, it’s celebrating its 150th anniversary, making it the perfect time to visit.
The 150th anniversary season kicks off in late June and runs until late August. Events taking place during the season range from art exhibits to orchestral performances, lectures to dance performances. Themes are likewise myriad, and include “the evolution of the modern presidency,” race and American religion, AI, world population growth, and more.
Of course, there’s more to do than just sit in on readings and lectures or attend classes or performances. The Institution’s lakeside setting also means attendees, just as their predecessors did more than a century ago, often go boating or enjoy other outdoor activities like golf and tennis.
Season tickets start at $2,326, but tickets providing access to the Institution’s programming for shorter lengths of time (including just a day or a few, or several weeks) are also available.
