Barcelona has no shortage of architectural extravagance. If you’re in a hurry and only have time to see a few, here are the top five architectural achievements in the entire city.

Torre Agbar

This towering structure resembles a giant cucumber according to some spectators, or maybe a finger pointing toward the heavens. Either way, it’s an impressive design that glows different shades of blue and red in the night sky.

Casa Milà

Casa Milà, named after the wealthy businessman Pere Milà, is more affectionately known as La Pedrera (The Quarry) after the gray stone façade. It’s rippling pattern and oddball design is a true treat to see, and it houses numerous homes and offices.

Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló is another design by the man who came up with La Pedrera. It’s meant to help you envision a seascape with windows and balconies modeled after waves and the walls inlaid with blue and green tiles. The design is just as spectacular inside, where you’ll feel like you’ve been transported right into the sea.

La Sagrada Família

The La Sagrada Familia is the most visited monument in Spain, attracting roughly 2.8 million visitors a year. The vertical spires emulate medieval cathedrals to create an awe-inspiring piece that towers over the city. Construction on the piece still continues to this day, though it’s already existed for more than 100 years.

Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar

Construction on the Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar began back in 1329 and it only took 54 years to build, which is quite a feat for one of Barcelona’s most magnificent structures to date. It’s a shining example of a Catalan Gothic church that is simple in scope, yet commandeers a sense of power and respect.

Are You Ready for the Final Switch to Real ID?

Yesterday, TSA began enforcing new identification guidelines, a change that’s been a long-time coming. Now, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID in order to fly on domestic flights, in lieu of a non-compliant driver’s license (some other forms of identification, such as passports, will still be acceptable).
