Founded in 1670, Charleston, S.C., is defined by its history, from its cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages to its colorful antebellum houses and charming French Quarter. Stroll The Battery promenade; take in the history of Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired; and imbibe in the lively local beer and food scene.

With its prime oceanfront location, Charleston has numerous seafood options. On your next visit to the South Carolina city, be sure to check out these spots.

167 Raw

With raw in its name, it should come as no surprise the restaurant does raw seafood right. Choose from a variety of rotating oysters, the tasty ceviche or poke. If raw seafood isn’t for you, opt for a seafood po’boy, fish taco or lobster roll.

Hank’s Seafood Restaurant

This popular downtown restaurant is frequently on various “best of” lists. Seafood is the star of the show at Hank’s. The menu includes a variety of seafood preparations from ceviche and she-crab soup to fried seafood platters and shrimp and grits.

Leon’s Oyster Shop

The award-winning restaurant specializes in Southern-style seafood. Housed in a former auto body shop, Leon’s serves everything from chargrilled oysters and a crispy catfish sandwich to a shrimp roll and smoked mahi dip. Try some fried chicken while you’re there, too.

The Ordinary

The upscale restaurant boasts a menu of cold and hot options as well as an oyster bar menu. Daily specials include fish fry, lobster roll, Caribbean fish stew and baked stuffed lobster.

FIG

FIG (an acronym for Food Is Good) focuses on the best seasonal offerings to ensure diners experience the flavors of Charleston. Expect to see entrées including grilled fish and fish stew. The menu changes often.
