Located in Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood, the National Museum of American Jewish History is at home surrounded by the city’s other popular museums and historical attractions. The museum was found in 1976 and housed in a different location. Following a large-scale redesign, the building that stands today opened to the public in 2010.
The museum’s focus is simple: recount the story of how Jews from around the world migrated to the United States to become today’s Jewish Americans. Here, visitors will explore permanent and special exhibitions describing the unique immigration experience. The museum’s artifacts cover many facets of the Jewish American experience including art, charity, childhood, immigration, civic service, religion, sports and work. More than 30,000 artifacts make up the collection, spanning the museum’s four floors of exhibition space.
If you’d prefer a guided tour, free public tours of the museum’s highlights are available most days between 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. These tours are about 60 minutes in length. The museum is closed Mondays and many federal holidays, but is open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, the Fourth of July and Christmas Day. Regular adult admission costs $12. Senior and student admission costs $11. Admission is free for members, children under 12 and active military members with ID.
