Under $100: Kaua’i’s North Shore

Under $100 / North America

Kaua’i’s dazzling North Shore is fringed with pristine beaches set against a backdrop of misty mountains. It’s a stunning region, but it’s most certainly been discovered. The usually high island prices are even more budget busting here.

But bargains — and cheap activities — are possible. Start your day with a nutritious and refreshing acai bowl, made with fresh fruit and frozen acai sorbet. Numerous food trucks and roadside stands serve the stuff, and it runs around $12 depending on your add-ins.

Next, grab snorkel gear at Snorkel Depot in Hanalei, one of the best budget outfitters in town. A full snorkel set is just $5 per person per day. You can spend the rest of the morning — when the waves are calmest and the weather is most reliable — exploring the sea life at local beaches like Tunnels Beach.

For lunch, head into Hanalei, where Chicken in a Barrel will fill you up with barbecue chicken and sides for around $15.

In the afternoon, hit the hiking trails if the weather holds. The popular Kalalau Trail can be crowded, so opt for Okolehau Trail, a 4.6-mile round-trip jaunt that offers views of the coast.

Freshen up for dinner at Tahiti Nui, where there’s nightly live music and excellent Hawai’ian staples. Your remaining budget will serve you well for an entrée and the Mai Tai, the bar’s specialty.
