Golfing On A Volcano

For those who enjoy golfing or simply wish to give it a try before you die, there are a few golf courses around the world that are nothing short of unique. What makes these two courses I’ve chosen truly unique is the fact that each are located almost uncomfortably near active volcanoes if not outright on one. While there are beautiful and different courses in nearly every corner of the world, these two and the rumblings of the active volcanoes should not be missed even if the occasional eruption does occur in your backswing and could ruin that shot.

Volcano Golf Course, located about 30 miles from Hilo and located in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park at 4,000 feet above sea level nestled on the rim of the active Kilauea volcanic crater, offers views of both the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes and offers an incredibly isolated round of golf with a solid likelihood of seeing wild turkeys and Hawai’ian condors. Despite its uniqueness, it’s one of the cheapest rounds of golf on the islands at just more than $60.

For my money for the best in volcano golf, you’ll need to head to the area surrounding the colonial city of Antigua, Guatemala. La Reunion on any given day offers a view of four volcanoes (three active including the one you’re questioning playing on) and was designed by the famous designers Pete and Perry Dye. The whole complex is rumored to have cost upward of $100 million and never disappoints. It’s wide open, yet difficult especially when you consider the distractions caused by its beauty.
