When in Portland, do as the Portlanders do. This means starting your day with the perfect cup of coffee from any number of independent coffee roasters. A solid caffeine fix will come from Stumptown Coffee, where a large cup will run you $3. Now that you are caffeinated and, hopefully have your rain boots on, make your way to Café Broder for breakfast. At either the northern or southern location, indulge in any number of small skillet breakfasts. Try the seasonal griddlecakes, or the Förlorade Ägg (lost eggs), a decadent mix of ham, spinach and Parmesan served with its signature walnut toast for $12. Definitely throw in a half order of Aebleskivar (Danish pancakes) with lemon curd for $7.
In order to build up your appetite again, go on any number of walking tours. The underground tour for $23 comes highly recommended. You will be guided through the Japanese Gardens, given a sordid history of the Willamette River and provided with the origin story of Voodoo Donuts. You will also learn about the dangers of crimping in 19th-century Portland. This practice involved tricking drunken sailors into indentured servitude and reveals the semi-secret history of Portland’s underground tunnels. After learning about its much rougher history of lumberjacks and sailors, remind yourself of Portland’s tamer contemporary culture by visiting the original Powell’s Books where any book lover can get lost for hours.
For dinner, stop by Afuri Ramen. It serves up traditional ramen with a twist. Enjoy the house-made gyoza dumplings or Afuri sushi rolls, and the signature Yuzo Shio ramen with pork belly and a citrus kick for around $30. In addition to sake flights, which average $20, there is an extensive wine, spirits and cocktail menu.
End your day in Portland with people watching and dessert at Voodoo Donuts. Donuts range 95 cents to around $5, so why not try the Oh Captain, My Captain donut and enjoy the nightly ambiance.
