Tips / Travel

Traveling with companions of the four-legged variety is always a challenge — it takes more coordination and planning than a getaway with your human pals. But, when most people talk about traveling with a pet, they mean a dog, but cats can and will travel too.

Many of the same rules apply to cats as they do to dogs. No matter how calm your kitty is, you still need to alert airline staff you’re traveling with an animal and book hotel rooms that allow for animals. These extra steps will ensure you’re not stuck with an unexpected cleaning bill or delayed by airline flights.

As always, pack smart. Most airlines and forms of public transportation require any and all animals be kept in closed cages or bags while in transit. This is especially important if your animal gets anxious in new places. If that is the case, consider getting tranquilizers from your vet before the start of your trip, the last thing you want is to be in a new place with an anxious animal.

This almost goes without saying but make sure your cat is micro-chipped and has a collar with identification, in case anything goes awry. Also pack an adequate supply of food, water and any other items your kitty needs on a daily basis.

Finally, be considerate. Travel is not for every pet; make sure your cat is the kind who can handle new places and who you trust not to destroy the hotel room while you’re away. If so, then your trip will be absolutely paw-fect!
