Home to the Indianapolis 500, the largest one-day sporting event in the world, Indianapolis is the capital city of Indiana and the state’s largest.

Start your day on a sweet note at The Dancing Donut. The rotating menu features quirky flavors including the John Dough, Kevin Bacon and Éclair Huxtable. Vegan and gluten-free options are available daily. Spend about $3.

Embrace your inner child and visit the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The museum is the largest of its kind in the world, housing more than 120,000 artifacts. Adult admission costs $22.50. Visit Dallara IndyCar Factory for an up-close look at all things IndyCar. The 202,000-square-foot facility is located one-third of a mile from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Open Monday–Saturday, adult admission costs $10.

For a unique brewery experience, stop by St. Joseph Brewery & Public House. Housed in a former Catholic church, the brewery serves up beers named after its religious roots — Confessional India Pale Ale, Holy Roller Oat IPA and All Saints Golden Wheat to name a few. St. Joseph’s boasts a full menu, with entrees available after 5 p.m. A beer and a sandwich cost less than $20. Walk off that beer with a stroll though Eagle Creek Park. One of the largest city parks in the country, Eagle Creek features more than 16 miles of trails on 3,900 wooded acres. Or explore the 1,400 acres of water, including a reservoir.

Opened in 1902, St. Elmo Steak House is an Indianapolis institution. Famous for their signature shrimp cocktail with spicy cocktail sauce, the restaurant offers classic steakhouse dishes and a 20,000-bottle wine cellar. Dinner costs $30–50.
