Washington State’s Mount Baker is an active volcano and one of the area’s most physically prominent peaks. Its glacier-covered slopes soar to 10,000 feet, high above the surrounding Cascades.
In winter, Mount Baker receives an astounding amount of snow. In fact, the area set a record for the most snowfall ever measured in the United States in a single season in 1998–99, recording 1,140 inches of snowfall. That fact makes it a wonderful winter playground for a variety of activities.
Base your trip around the Mount Baker ski area where you can rent skis and snowboards and take lessons or buy lift tickets for their numerous exciting runs. There are also restaurants where you can relax, sip local beer and fuel up after a long day on the mountain. Many of the runs offer fantastic views of nearby Mount Shuksan, another impressive Cascade mountain.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed experience, bring snowshoes for a trek up to Artist Point, which offers panoramic views of the mountains after a fairly short hike of just two miles one-way. The end point is one of the most iconic viewpoints in the region.
