Under $100: Breckenridge, Colo.

As a high-class ski resort driving in tourists throughout most of the winter, it’s hard to think anyone could spend a truly thorough day in Breckenridge without spending more than $100. A lift ticket up the slope is around $100 and the food in the lodges is always overpriced. But, if you roam outside the box, there are great places to eat, ski and enjoy the day without breaking the bank.

For a morning ski, take a drive up to Mt. Baldy and hike up. It’s a great morning workout with no crowds to hog the powder on your way down. If hiking and skiing are not your thing, you can snowshoe up the paths underneath the gondola on Peak 7 and 8. Rentals are about $20 and paths are carved every three days by the Breckenridge Nordic Center, which also provides trail maps. Watch out for moose and fox sightings and bring a camera to capture the scenery.
