The top names in athletics come to the Pacific Northwest for the World Indoor Championships.
Every two years, national federations from around the world name their teams to compete for indoor titles across the whole spectrum of athletics. In 2016, the United States will host the competition for only the second time in history, and the city of Portland has been chosen. The competition will run from March 17–20, and the first event is the men’s pole vault.
Around the world athletes are competing in indoor national competitions in order to decide who will make it onto the plane to Portland. The biggest names in the sport will be in attendance, including Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world.
Whether you are a keen fan of athletics or not, it will be a great time to visit Portland. People from all over the world will be coming to town, and large sporting events always make for a carnival atmosphere in the host city.
If you can’t make it in person, tune into the events on television. Who knows, there could be some new indoor world records set. U.S. decathlon star Ashton Eaton will be looking to break his own world record, while fellow star and four-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix will also be in attendance.
