If you are thinking of taking up surfing, it might make sense to get your own board. Here are some budget options to consider.

First of all, look for a board that suits you. Beginner boards need to be big and soft so you can handle them more easily, and those who are taller and heavier, especially, need a big board.

South Bay Board Co. is based in Los Angeles and is known for great beginner boards, such as the Gold Coast Heritage. It’s a soft board covered in resin layers for durability, and the eight-foot by eight-inch length is great for getting the hang of things.

Another great option is the Wavestorm eight-foot Classic Pineline, made by one of the biggest U.S. surf brands. It’s a classic longboard shape that is affordable and will help you develop your skills.

If you are getting better at surfing, try the BIC Sport DURA-TEC board. Known as some of the most durable surfboards out there, they are covered in a plastic outer shell. This means it’s not technically a soft board and will hurt if you hit someone with it, so you should be confident in your ability not to wipe out and hit someone.
