Destinations / North America

Vermont has long held status as the state with the most breweries per capita. No matter which small town or village you visit, there seems to be at least a handful of breweries to pick from. So, if you’re in Stowe — whether for the destination’s great skiing or a summer hike — which do you visit? Here are the best.

The Alchemist Brewery

Routinely lauded as one of the best breweries not just in Vermont, but in the country, The Alchemist is a mecca for beer enthusiasts. This brewery distributes its beers on a limited basis, but this is where you can try a range of pours you won’t get anywhere else. Take a tour for a behind-the-scenes look at the operations and a free drink.

Von Trapp Brewery

Yes, it’s those von Trapps. The very real family from The Sound of Music set up shop in Vermont nearly a century ago, and now you can visit Trapp Family Lodge, as well as Von Trapp Brewery. Make plans to enjoy an Austrian-inspired dinner while you’re there.

Idletyme Brewery

A smaller artisan brewery, Idletyme has still gained a reputation for its Bavarian weizens and lively tavern. If the weather is nice, grab a spot on the patio and be sure to try chili maple wings along with your brews.
