With the recent surge in advertising Iceland as a popular stopover excursion for travelers between mainland Europe and North America, travelers can face a questionable fate within the walls of Keflavik International Airport. A few hours stuck in an international airport does not have to be a worry-filled waste of time.
Located in Keflavik, Iceland, approximately 30 miles from Reykjavik proper, the airport is just small enough to navigate with ease but also big enough to carve out your own corner of solitude.
Just past security is a duty-free mecca where Iceland liquors and stuffed puffins serve as perfect souvenirs and gifts. Through the duty-free shop is a smattering of shops including a specialty store that sells spa essentials found at the Blue Lagoon, Reykjavik’s luxurious hot spring spa experience. Items such as algae masks, lava scrubs and mineral foam cleansers can be purchased without even visiting the spa. Peruse other Icelandic gems such as sweaters and shawls made from sheep’s wool and wallets make from fish scales.
Outside of the shops lie a few choices for food and beverages such as casual dining at Joe & The Juice, the self-service House of Food and the coffee-focused Segafredo. Strategically placed information boards display updated flight information, keeping travelers in the know about their upcoming departures.
Free WiFi, more than 100 charging stations and only three terminals (all of which are accessible on foot) make Keflavik Airport a comfortable space for a layover of any length.
