Originating in the region, Earthship houses are unique structures made of both natural and upcycled materials, designed to withstand extreme desert temperatures. Created by Michael Reynolds in the late 20th century, Earthship design relies minimally on fossil fuels and public utilities. Located about a mile from Taos is Taos Pueblo, the ancient settlement of a Taos-speaking Native American tribe of Puebloan people. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Taos Pueblo likely dates back to at least the 13th century. Built in the late 18th century, San Francisco de Asís Parish Church was once the epicenter of the region. A designated World Heritage church and a National Historic Landmark, the church has been the muse for artists like Georgia O’Keefe.
