For travelers, Venice offers an aura of old world romance not found in other, more modern cities. However, because of the way the city is built, there are some usual dangers that tourists may not be familiar with.
Drowning
Although the iconic canals of Venice may be alluring spectacles to admire, they pose the potential risk of drowning. For travelers with children, it is best to keep them from rocking the gondolas or leaning over railings. For others, a night of too many libations might end in an unexpected fall into the water. Traveling with others is a smart way to avoid this hazard.
Flooding
While the canals of Venice often flood onto the city streets, most of the time this will not mature into any real danger. However, a few times a year, excessive rain will cause flooding that can put individuals at risk. When this occurs, sirens across the city will sound — a warning to get inside and take cover.
Nighttime Travel
With the many beautiful maze-like brick streets and narrow alleyways, it is easy to get lost. Keeping a map on hand is an easy way to keep from wandering into a bad part of the city.
