Under $100 / Latin America

Despite a reputation which makes most travelers wary of spending any time in the biggest city in Central America, it is worth hanging around in Guatemala City for at least a day to see some of the historic center of town.

Start your day with breakfast at Café Saul in Zone 1, where a well-crafted breakfast will set you back between $7 and $10. Wander into the neighboring Spanish cultural center and take in an art exhibition before strolling down pedestrianized 6th Avenue, enjoying the hustle and bustle of the city’s main shopping street.

At the end of 6th, you will come out on the edge of the huge central square, flanked by the presidential palace (entrance $5). Step inside and marvel at the opulent architecture and wander around one of the frequent art exhibitions before taking a look out over the square from one of the balconies.

Make a quick visit to the Central Market before heading into El Portalito, a favorite drinking hole of Che Guevara’s during his brief time in the city. Sip on a draft beer and munch on some tapas ($10) before stepping out and taking a taxi up to the Popol Vuh Museum, where you can learn about the history of the Maya in Guatemala ($8 taxi and $6 entrance fee).

After a cultural afternoon it’s time to blow off some steam in the Zona Viva, Zone 10. Treat yourself to a gourmet meal at Gracia ($30) before enjoying some drinks at neighborhood favorite Esperanto ($20) and then retire to your lodgings to continue your Guatemalan adventure the next day.
