ONE Club, situated in the ritzy Zona Viva of the Guatemalan capital, caters to a high-end crowd and regularly hosts international performers. The space is cavernous, and its white walls add to the super-club feel; this is not your dark, dingy basement disco.
The large expanses of white wall provides ample space for impressive visuals to be projected, but they come at the expense of the performers, who are placed high up and too far away from the crowd below. This robs the venue of any intimacy and makes ONE feel slightly impersonal. Attentive staff are always on hand to bring you another drink, and the prices would suggest that they must be fairly well paid.
Music lovers will surely be impressed by Central America’s only Funktion One sound system. The speakers have become the international standard in electronic music circles, and with good reason. The sound manages to fill the venue, and provides the saving grace for what is an otherwise soul-less clubbing experience.
On a continent where large clubs with decent sound systems are few and far between, ONE should not have a hard time making a name for itself. However it feels as though the venue was hastily put together using a dated formula rather than displaying any great personality. If seeing and being seen is your primary aim on a night out, ONE may be the club for you. If, however, you are looking to enjoy a performance in the company of fellow music lovers, there are far better venues to do so than ONE.
