Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

The popularity of the Kentucky Derby in the United States proves people are always down to see an animal race around a track. The people of Dubai take this to a new, albeit unique, level. Next time you’re in town consider taking in one of their highly popular camel races.

The races are held on an almost daily basis at the Dubai Camel Racing Club and are often free to the public. Though not nearly as fast as horses, camels are still a spectacle to watch. Twenty of them take to the track at a time, with robot jockeys fastened onto their backs rather than humans.

Children used to act as the primary camel jockeys in the country, but after banning them in recent years the citizens realized small robots controlled by men who drive around the track with a remote control work just as well. We told you it was unique.

Before the race you can often sit down with the camel owners to discuss the sport, its heritage and tradition and learn all about the different breeds and events. They’re happy to treat guests with food and coffee before each race, but it’s not often served inside the stadiums. Pack your own lunch.
