With many more people working remotely, so-called digital nomads are becoming an increasingly common sight.
If you are considering cutting ties with the office and working from wherever takes your fancy, there are a number of items that are almost essential in order to maximize your productivity. Leave your hulking laptop at home and invest in a smaller version with an SSD hard drive that is both more portable and will last longer on the road.
Once you get to your destination, invest in a USB modem as a back-up connection if you can’t find WiFi. You’ll never miss a deadline again. Next up is the issue of storage, and you will want to upload your files to a free cloud storage service like Google Drive or Dropbox. Those who work in data-heavy industries like video may want to pay for more space, but most people will be able to use a combination of free services. Any data you may need to access offline can be backed up on an external hard drive for an extra level of security.
The majority of people access the Internet are on a smartphone these days, and they can be invaluable for staying in touch when you are away from your computer. If you need to be in touch all the time, buy a local 3G SIM card and use a smartphone case which has a built-in battery so you’ll never run out of juice. Another solution to the modern scourge that is battery life is to carry a solar charger, particularly useful for those working in sunnier climes!
Now that you’ve got all of your gadgets, invest in some good insurance that will cover theft, loss and damage. The nomadic lifestyle can be hard on technology, but remember it’s essential for your work and should be adequately protected.
