Outdoor brand Patagonia joined the struggle to preserve the Jumbo Valley and oppose construction of a large-scale ski resort in the area.

For 24 years, activists from a number of diverse groups opposed development in the Purcell Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. To the Ktunaxa Nation, the area is known as Qat’muk, home of the grizzly bear spirit, and has become a haven for off-piste skiers and snowboarders.

At the time of writing, 8,173 people had signed an online petition calling for a ban on construction in the area, which is part of an international wildlife corridor designed to help bears pass freely between Canada and the United States. Conservationists worry the proposed ski resort would have devastating effects on local and continental populations of grizzly bears.

The Ktunaxa Nation declared the area one of significant spiritual and ecological importance, and now Patagonia produced a documentary aimed at raising awareness of the cause. Jumbo Wild is a joint effort between the outdoor brand and Sweetgrass Productions, which premiered in early October and will be shown at locations across North America.

Join the fight for permanent protection of the area by signing the petition.
