Planning a tropical getaway? Traipsing around an island can be heavenly, but don’t ignore your safety while you’re in paradise. Follow our tips for staying safe while soaking up the sun.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Swimming in the ocean and lying on the sand both increase UV exposure. Lather up with plenty of sunscreen and reapply every 80 minutes or two hours, depending on activity. If you plan to sit out in directly sunlight for relaxation or outdoor activities, wear a hat and long-sleeved, light-colored shirt.
- Drink plenty of water while sitting in the sun and sipping cocktails.
- Pack appropriate footwear for participating in your chosen activities.
- Bring extra medication in case your flight is delayed and you need to stay at your destination longer.
- Apply bug spray to avoid pesky and itchy bug bites.
- Be mindful of what you eat. Depending on your location, avoid produce that might be unwashed. Do not eat meat or dairy from roadside stands if you are unsure of the refrigeration.
- Many tropical locales cater to tourists, so be mindful of excursions that could be scams. Consult with the concierge at your hotel or resort for their approved recommendations.
