In today’s high-tech world, smartphones are a necessity for traveling. Unfortunately their price and fragility can also be a hindrance for travelers, thus creating the need for a protective, waterproof case that also provides a smooth user experience. Many of the rugged cases out there sacrifice usability for protection, but the LifeProof Nüüd for the iPhone 5/5s strikes the perfect balance for the most rigorous traveler.
One of the unique features of this case is that the entire front face is open. Most protective cases will be fully enclosed, thus sacrificing touch accuracy. The LifeProof Nüüd seals off the edges around front glass, allowing the case to remain waterproof up to two meters while retaining its precise touch. Be aware that the screen can’t be used underwater due to the nature of the iPhone’s capacitive touch screen, though you can still operate the camera by launching the app beforehand and using the volume button to snap a picture.
Drops are the common cause of damage to a phone, and the Nüüd can handle a fall up to two meters. Unfortunately what you gain in ruggedness you pay in size, and when you are on the road the last thing you want is extra bulk. Compared to Otterbox and LifeProof’s other models, the Nüüd is able to keep a slim profile thanks to its open front design. That being said this case still has significant width, and might be uncomfortable in slimmer fitting jeans.
Audio through the earpiece is clear, though the speakerphone can have a muffled sound. The packaging also includes a headphone extender that keeps the phone waterproof while the headphones are attached. There is also a microfiber cloth for dusting before installation, as well as a plastic film for people who want a little extra screen protection.
All in all the LifeProof Nüüd provides a robust compromise between bulk and protection. Thanks to its open-front design, users can get a rugged case without dealing with a lot of bulk or sacrificing their access to the touch screen.
