New York City is known for many things: shopping, dining, hotels, entertainment, Central Park, celebrity sightings, sports and theater. Broadway is a city staple, as Manhattan boasts 40 professional theatres with 500 or more seats.
A majority of the theaters are located in the Theater District — West 40th Street to West 54th Street and Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue. The district is a popular tourist attraction, drawing in approximately 13 million people to its shows each year.
Head to NYC and check out five must see Broadway shows.
Hamilton
If you don’t know someone who knows someone who knows someone in this hip-hop musical, good luck scoring tickets — unless you are willing to pay big bucks. Prices for regular seats start at $139 and premium at $549. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s rare Broadway phenomenon captivates the theater traditionalist and the young trendy individual. Hamilton is housed at the Richard Rogers Theatre. This masterpiece tells the tale of founding father Alexander Hamilton, through his triumphs and tribulations.
Waitress
Housed at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, Tony winner Jessie Mueller returns to Broadway with another spectacular performance. Inspired by Adrienne Shelly’s film Waitress, the musical celebrates life, motherhood, friendship and pie. Find out if Mueller, who is Jenna, can bake herself a new life. The musical’s score is by five-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles.
Book of Mormon
The Book of Mormon is a religious satire musical with the book, lyrics and music by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. The musical follows two Mormon missionaries as they share their scriptures with those of a Ugandan village. The two young men endure many troubles along their journey. The Tony- and Grammy-winning musical is housed at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.
Aladdin
Discover a whole new world as Aladdin and his friends take you on an unforgettable magic carpet ride in the New Amsterdam Theatre. The musical is based on the 1992 timeless Disney animated film about how a poor young man discovers a genie lamp and uses his wishes to marry Princess Jasmine.
Jersey Boys
Go behind the music and dive into the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons in the real-life musical phenomenon. Witness four guys from Jersey transform into international sensations. Oh what a night, it’s just too good to be true.
