With the World Surfing Games returning to Punta Rocas after 49 years, the Peruvian coastline is quickly becoming a top destination for surfers around the world. Follow these tips and catch some waves at surfing’s new hot spot.
Wear a wetsuit
Peru might lie close to the equator but winter is the time for big waves and the water here can get quite cold; 3/2 mm will suit you fine, but be sure to wear a pair of booties for the rocks.
Pack a quiver
Peru’s growing surf community will tell you that there is a large variety of waves here that can get pretty big. A rounded pintail will help you retain some control on those big lefts.
Stay left
Goofy-footers will be right at home in Peru, but for the rest of you, be aware the waves here break left. In fact, Máncora is home to the biggest left-hand point break in the world, and Chicama is home to the longest.
Head South
Peru is making a name for itself as a surfing destination, and most of the hot spots like Máncora and Chicama are north of Lima. Head down the southern coast to find great spots and big waves with no crowds. Be sure to check out the local favorite, Punta Hermosa.
Join the party
Lima is also becoming a party destination for travelers on the “Gringo Trail.” Lima has great nightlife and Cusco is known for some of the wildest parties on the mainland, but for beach parties, head to Mancora.
