Review: Kaffekoppen, Stockholm

In Stockholm, Sweden, three out of the four seasons can harbor dark skies, cold temperatures and (for those who are not used to it) downright misery. To avoid becoming a victim of seasonal affective disorder, Swedes duck into well-lit sanctuaries for pick-me-ups in the form of a Swedish fika (a tradition of afternoon coffee accompanied by something sweet). In Stockholm’s Old Town — also known as Gamla Stan — cozy candlelit cafes fill up during the afternoon hours and provide a respite from the clouds and the cold.

One such café is located in Stortorget, a colorful plaza in Gamla Stan shared by the Nobel Museum. Kaffekoppen is a quintessential Swedish watering hole where the aromas of coffee and sugar waft through the air upon entering the warm interior. Although the ground floor has limited seating, scale the spiral staircase to the basement where candelabras lend just enough light to illuminate the wooden tables.

Settle in with a cup of coffee (or two, refills are unlimited!) and a sweet treat like their standard cinnamon rolls or cakes. Kaffekoppen also has a full menu with generously sized portions of sandwiches and soups. Reasonable prices for such a touristy area, Kaffekoppen is a fika lover’s dream.
