Top 5 / Europe

Visitors may find the capital of Sweden is slightly on the pricey side, but Stockholm harbors plenty of free attractions and activities, especially in the summer months. Consider visiting during the times of year when daylight hours are plentiful, and partake in the following free activities.

Stroll through Old Town. The first (and most obvious) option is to aimlessly roam the streets of Stockholm’s Old Town, also known as Gamla Stan. The cobblestone walkways, colorful façades and tranquil corridors will transport you a Sweden from the past. Stop for a fika at one of the many cafés and enjoy a taste of Swedish tradition.

Go underground. If the clouds are out or the sun has gone down, head underground. Some of Stockholm’s most beautiful displays of art can be found in the city’s metro stations, where wonderlands of designs feature painted ceilings, sculptures and fun themes.

Lay out. Although Sweden can be synonymous with cold weather and dark skies, the summers are quite the opposite. Long, warm days can be spent at the veritable urban beaches along the river.

Park it. Stockholm’s Djurgården is a natural playground for all ages. It is also a one-stop shop for tourists as the entrance of the park features some of the city’s top museums such as the Vasa Museum and Abba Museum. Inside the park, meander through paved pathways and breathe in the clean air.

Take in the views. Stockholm may be mostly flat, but the hills in the neighborhood Södermalm make for a decent climb and breathtaking views of the spread-out city.
