Under $100 / Europe

Scandinavia garnered a reputation for being beautiful and safe, but also a bit expensive. Although Stockholm is not as pricey as her neighbors Oslo and Helsinki, travelers may find themselves stretching their budgets to fully enjoy Sweden’s capital. Thankfully, there is much to do in the city of 14 islands that does not require handing over all your precious krona.

Start the day in Stockholm with their ultra-strong coffee and a pastry, a meal that won’t cost more than $7. Pending the state of the weather, spend the morning exploring the waterfront and expansive park, Djurgården. Stroll along the green pathways and enjoy the uniquely designed museums that surround the park’s entrance. For those willing to shell out a few bucks to visit the museums, the rates are fairly reasonable: Skansen (the world’s first open-air museum) is $18 during the summer; the Vasa Museum that houses the completely restored ship is $13; and the Abba Museum is $19.50.

As lunchtime sets in, head west to Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s quaint and cozy Old Town. Restaurants along the main drag are a bit expensive, but follow tiny corridors to find the hidden gems where local menus are ripe with affordable dishes. A hearty bowl of soup or a sandwich will be less than $15.

Spend the afternoon meandering the cobblestone streets of Old Town before taking part in the traditional Swedish post-lunch coffee break known as a fika. Pair your coffee with a cinnamon bun for the real deal.

Dinner in Stockholm will probably be your most expensive venture of the day, so do your research in advance to find the meal in a neighborhood that will fit your budget. Entrees of fish and meatballs can start at around $20, but Stockholm’s international appeal means all types of cuisine are available from inexpensive halal to pay-by-the-plate tapas.
