There are only three ways to travel from the Old Port of Santorini to the top of Thira, the island’s capital. For a quick and scenic three-minute ride up, take the cable car. For a little more adventure and risk, take a traditional donkey ride via the Donkey Path.
The Donkey Path, also known as the old Karavolades stairs, is 588 winding stairs up the cliffside taking you into the capital city. Before the cable car was installed in 1979, it was the only way up. If you’re looking for something interesting, adventurous and physically challenging, the Donkey path is right up your alley (pun intended).
The walk offers incredible, unspoiled and unobstructed views from the cliffsides of Santorini, for those willing to make the journey. It is not recommended for those who can’t handle the smell and sight of donkeys and a bit of sweat, or for those with any health conditions. The journey can take about 20–30 minutes to complete, depending on your pace and physical fitness.
Take as many stops as you’d like to admire the views as you get higher and higher up the trail; it is quite the journey.
Once you reach the top, a clearly marked 588th step, reward yourself with a cold drink at one of the many restaurants in Thira. Each one offers a unique cuisine and jaw-dropping view of the Caldera and sea below.
