The biannual sports event comes to Los Angeles this month and will welcome around 10,000 competitors from more than 70 countries.

Police and fire crews from around the world will take part in 60 different events over 10 days in an Olympic-style competition. Boxing, swimming, surfing, paintball and many track and field events all feature on the program.

There are more than 30 venues dotted around Southern California, so visitors to the region can watch whichever event is taking place closest to them. Organizers predict there will be around 100,000 spectators.

With so many different sports to watch, there is something for everyone. Southern California is already a popular area to visit and the games provide an extra reason to book a trip.

Los Angeles is perhaps the most popular destination in the region, while San Diego is also growing in popularity. The region is also home to impressive natural attractions, with many different mountain ranges and a long coastline.

The weather is great in August and you can take long road trips up the Californian coast to San Francisco. One potential trip idea is a fly-drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco, taking in some of the best driving on the West Coast.
