To keep the House of Grimaldi from bankruptcy, Prince Florestan I’s wife, Princess Caroline (1793–1879), suggested opening a casino in Monaco. The casino eventually found a home in the area named Les Spelugues. Princess Caroline convinced the operator of the Bad Homburg casino, Francois Blanc, to move to Monaco and run the casino. To improve the casino’s appeal, Les Spelugues was renamed Monte Carlo in honor of Prince Charles.
The Casino de Monte-Carlo, also known as the Monte Carlo Casino, opened in 1863 and has been operating for 154 years. The company Societe des Bains de Mer et du Cercle des Etrangers formed to oversee the business. In the process of securing investors, Blanc managed to become the majority stockholder. Owning and managing the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo, the Monte Carlo Casino and the Opera de Monte-Carlo, SBM employs more people than anyone else in Monaco.
Internationally known and frequented by celebrities, aristocrats and James Bond, the Casino de Monte-Carlo’s majestic history continues to lure in hopeful gamblers. However, citizens of Monaco are forbidden from playing. Black Jack, Roulette, Texas Hold’em, and slot machines entertain players of all skill levels.
Staff enforces a casual dress code during the day and blazers in the evening. Tours are offered in the morning and the casino opens at 2 p.m.; expect to pay admission.
