Should You Go Ultra-Light?

Ultra-light backpackers specialize in carrying the bare minimum necessities for wilderness adventures. They often buy gear that is extremely light, but they also specialize in cutting down on the items they bring to an extreme degree.

Should you choose to go “ultra light,” there are a few factors to consider. First and foremost for most travelers is the high price of lightweight gear. With only a few exceptions, the lighter you go, the more you pay. And if you’re aiming to have all of your gear register at ultr- light weights, the bottom line is going to add up, fast.

You’ll also sacrifice some comfort when you go ultra light. While you’ll certainly feel better and move more easily with less on your back, you’ll give up comfort once you stop hiking. Tents are likely to have less space than weightier versions, and sleeping bags may not be as cozy. Sleeping pads, also, will ditch comfort to save weight.

And the lighter you go, the less you’re likely to bring. That means freeze-dried meals, sacrificing extras and leaving behind all but the most essential pieces of gear.

Should you choose to buy just a couple of lightweight items — finding your sweet spots of comfort and price — you’ll still stand to benefit without having to go completely ultra light.
