A recent survey by Expedia shows millennials (travelers aged 24–35) travel the most days out of the year, at 35 days. Close behind are Generation Z travelers (18–23), who travel 29 days each year. Generation X travels least, with family and work commitments cited as reasons.
According to the study, though, while millennials do take the highest number of trips per year (5.6), they do not take the longest trips per year. They average 6.2 days, while Boomers take the longest trips, at 7.8 days.
Other findings uncovered millennials most frequently travel domestically, with 81 percent of respondents saying their last trip was to a U.S. destination. Out of all generations, Gen Z reported the highest percentage of international trips.
As for the types of trips taken, millennials reported most were for the purpose of relaxation, followed by visiting family, then sightseeing, then romance. Air travel was the most popular form of transportation among all age groups, and similarly, traditional hotels were the most popular form of accommodations among all age groups.
Unsurprisingly, younger travelers stated budget was a primary factor when planning travel, with budget decreasing in importance as age increased. When asked when they book a trip, both millennials and Gen Z reported a booking in the last three months, while much of the older generations had let six months to a year pass since their last booking.
The top takeaway regarding millennials, according to Expedia executives — millennials, more than any other generation, are influenced by ads during their travel decision-making process and they’re most influenced by ads featuring appealing deals, imagery or informative content. Additionally, more than half of millennials use an online travel agency for booking.
