There are plenty of famous holiday attractions around the country. However, not all of these are worth the experience. We compiled a list of attractions and events you can skip this holiday season.
New Year’s Eve in Times Square
Millions of people gather around their televisions Dec. 31 to watch the ball drop in Times Square. With crowds jamming the streets hours ahead for about 10 seconds of excitement, you’re better off staying at home than trekking to Manhattan for the event.
Shopping Mall Santa
While taking the kids to sit on Santa’s lap may be a family tradition, the experience can often be traumatizing for small children. If your child is at least grade-school age and you insist on this tradition, be sure to visit St. Nick on a weekday well ahead of Christmas to avoid crowds.
Holiday Parades
Big cities around the country host parades throughout the holiday season. To get a good spot, people line up hours in advance. Depending on the location, bathrooms may be sparse and the temperatures may be low, making for an uncomfortable experience. Unless you live in a small town with a short route, skip the parade.
Tree lightings
The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting is another famous New York City attraction worth skipping. Once the official lighting takes place, the lights stay up through the holiday season. Avoid waiting hours for an attraction you can visit another day at your leisure. Host a small Christmas tree lighting party at your home for your family and friends. It’ll be warmer and less crowded than the large city events.
