Whether you only have two days or you can stay for longer, there is plenty to see in the Mexican city of Guanajuato.
Start by walking around the magnificent center of town, with its impressive architecture paid for by the silver mines that surround the city. Take a stroll to the north of town to visit the Mummy Museum, where you can see the mummified remains of residents of a local cemetery.
Another must see is “El Pipila,” a statue that commemorates a hero of the Mexican revolution. It looms over town sat high on a hill you can walk up. Alternatively, take the funicular railway if you don’t want to break a sweat.
Watch sunset at El Pipila before descending to take in a show at Teatro Juarez, an opulent theater that hosts regular performances. If you can’t get a ticket join a callejoneada, one of the famous street parties that parade through the city led by musicians and singers.
It’s also worth making time to visit one of the old mines, such as La Valenciana. You can get a guided tour of the upper part of the mineshaft and visit a museum full of mining artifacts.
