The island of Boracay in the Philippines, a popular stop for tourists, closed for six months as of April 26 for a clean-up.
The Philippine government decided to close the island citing environmental concerns about sewage. The closure will allow time for a solid waste management facility to be installed.
Residents on the island are helping with the clean-up, which may end up taking less than the six-month estimate. Officials are hopeful this move will help contribute to the island’s sustainability long term.
“We will do what we can within our capacity, to help the rehabilitation of the island,” Rowen Aguirre, Malay municipal executive assistant for Boracay affairs, told the Inquirer.
Boracay is a small island with popular white-sand beaches that lure tourists from around Asia. The beaches are lined with hotels, diving shops and restaurants. Around 1 million foreign visitors stopped in Boracay last year, according to the Department of Tourism in the Philippines.
