Getting More From Your Airline

The quality of airline amenities decreased significantly over the years. Between flight expenses, less seating room, paying for bags and sometimes paying for even the smallest snack, it feels like we are entitled to a little bit more service most of the time. Trying to claim airlines should give you more perks is going to be pretty impossible, but knowing what you are already entitled to is a good start.

Thrillist recently issued some good tips. For instance, instead of travel vouchers, you’re entitled to a cash refund if you are bumped off a flight without volunteering. Even if the airline rebooks you and you arrive at your destination more than two hours late, then they owe you that one-way fare or, perhaps, more if you arrive later than two hours late.

You are allowed to cancel a booking for no fees within 24 hours of making the reservation. Even if your ticket is non-refundable, you can get a refund if your flight is canceled because the airline is at fault; this will not apply to acts of god like weather, of course. And if they rebook you on another flight, do not let them cancel your existing flight, theoretically you should be allowed to be rebooked and convert your existing flight into a credit with the airline.

The government’s tips for aviation consumer protection are also really helpful. Being informed about what you can still get from your airline, particularly if have been inconvenienced, goes a long way.
