Tips / Destination

The Honduran island of Utila is a great stop on the Central American backpacker trail. Here are some of the top activities for visitors.

No. 1 is scuba diving and snorkeling, the main reason people come here. It’s one of the cheapest places in the world to get a scuba diving certificate, and tourism on the island boomed as a result.

Time your visit March–April or August–September and you might be lucky enough to swim with the biggest fish in the sea. Whale sharks are often spotted in these waters, and there are regular boat tours that let you get up close and personal with the gentle giants.

Another popular activity is kayaking, with extensive mangrove forests to explore. Further afield you can visit Cayo Cochinos Marine Park, where there are sailboat tours. If you’re lucky you might spot some dolphins as you fish for your lunch and enjoy the scenery.

If you want to relax, take a trip to the largest flotation tank in the world. Flotation therapy supposedly has myriad health benefits, so you’ll come out feeling better than ever. Don’t miss out on a unique experience.
