Gone are the days when spring break was synonymous with Cabo and Cancun. With the world becoming easier to access and students learning more about different destinations through social media, it’s not unlikely to find spring breakers exploring the far reaches of Thailand or Bali. If you or your friends are looking for a getaway that feels international but is still reachable in your own backyard, look no further than San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The island of Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and enjoys many of the same privileges as the 50 states. The currency is the dollar, most people speak fluent English and you can simply bring your government-issued ID to board the plane. One major difference? The drinking age is 18.
This means spring breakers can enjoy the renowned cocktail lounges, pool day clubs, speakeasy scene and nightclubs San Juan has to offer. Aside from access to nightlife, students on spring break can also enjoy a myriad of adventure-driven activities like ATVing through the Carabali Rainforest Park, night kayaking over a bioluminescent bay or hiking the “Window Cave” for a gorgeous vantage point of the island.
The food scene is on the rise in the city as well. The outdoor food hall of Lote23 cannot be missed, especially on a Friday or Saturday night when there’s live music or old movies playing on a small stage. Check out the high-end eatery Santaella for the best dinner in town and then head to the extensive speakeasy La Factoria, located in Old Town.
