Sydney has been leading the way in gay rights for more than a decade. Though the country has yet to make the leap to legalize same-sex marriage, Sydney is definitely friendly to gay tourists. The Australian capital hosted the 2002 Gay Games and is home to one of the biggest gay tourism events in the world, Mardi Gras.
The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras happens during February and March of every year and brings in gay tourists from all over the planet. The goal of the festival is to raise awareness and acceptance for the global LGBTQI community while having a blast. Events include the annual Harbor Party, which includes music, dancing and a lot of skin, but also a parade, fair and pool party. More than half a million people attend each year.
Sydney is also a great destination for beach-goers, with six gay-friendly beaches to choose from. The most popular spots are Bronte Beach, Tamarama and North Bondi Beach.
Oxford St. Darlinghurst, otherwise known as The Golden Mile, is the center of the gay community in Sydney and it’s where you’ll find most of the nightlife. If it’s your first time, you’ll want to stop by The Midnight Shift, often considered the best gay bar in the city with somewhat of an international following.
