Under $100: Takayama, Japan

The charming mountain town of Takayama is a popular stop off tourists who want to experience breathtaking mountain scenery and eat incredible local beef. Here’s how to see it on a budget.

Start the day with breakfast at Coffee Don, where you can get a variety of coffees and a light breakfast for about $10. After that, stroll to the river and peruse the stalls at the morning market, snacking on some local specialties as you go ($5). Continue your walk around the old town, where you can look in on atmospheric old shrines and traditional houses.

When you get peckish again, stop for lunch at Sukeharu, where you can try the amazing Hida beef. This delicious local specialty is marbled through with fat, which means it practically melts on your tongue. Expect to spend $20 here.

Walk off your lunch on Higashiyama Walking Course, which takes you up a steep hill to the ruins of an old castle and around a beautiful park. It should take you around 1.5 hours to stroll, stopping to see if you can spot some of the local birds.

Descend back into town and go for dinner at Sushi Dining Nob, where you can get amazing sushi for bargain prices. Order a selection and your bill should come in at around $30. Continue your night at the amazing Red Hill Pub, a small bar with a friendly, English-speaking owner and drinks around $6.
