Just off the western coast of North Africa is a chain of islands that, although they belong to Spain, feel worlds away from the mainland. Majestic volcanoes, serene beaches and variety from island to island make the Canary Islands a worthy vacation destination. When opting to visit the island of Tenerife and when not hiking along the rugged coastline or climbing to Spain’s highest point, including the mainland, spend a day in the port city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one of the biggest towns on the island, and you can do so on a budget.
Fuel yourself with a café con leche from one of the many cafeterias around the city, then set off to start exploring. Get a taste of local culture by visiting Mercado Municipal Nuestra Senora de Africa, also know as La Recova, which opens bright and early at 7 a.m. Enjoy both the architecture of the market as well as the wide array of fruits, vegetables and fresh seafood for sale.
Climb to the top of Palmetum, a former landfill of trash that is now a stunning botanical garden from which you can see views of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the sea. Some even say the gardens are home to the largest collection of tropical palm trees in the world.
Slow down in the afternoon at Playa de las Teresitas, a long stretch of yellow-sand beach where you can snag two lounge chairs and a parasol for €20 euros, but also receive a €20 credit for the beach bar’s food and drinks.
As the day winds down, treat yourself to a delectable dinner on the eclectic patio at Guannabi, or with cozy and quiet tapas at D’tapas 26.
