Visiting the city of Brotherly Love?
It’s not just the land of cheesesteaks and Eagles fans. Philadelphia is also home to some of the most important sites from United States history. If you want to learn more about America’s founding, be sure to visit historic Philadelphia and explore the country’s colonial history.
Independence Hall
Independence Hall stands at the corner of 5th and Chestnut Streets in the center of downtown Philadelphia. The site of the Second Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention, the Hall is where America’s Founding Fathers gathered to sign the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
Tours through Independence Hall are timed to prevent long waits, so be sure to pick up your tickets at the Independence Visitor Center. Admission is free, though if you reserve tickets in advance there will be a $1.50 fee per ticket.
Betsy Ross House
Built more than 250 years ago, the Betsy Ross House is located at 239 Arch St., just a short walk from Independence Hall. This tiny museum has been open to the public since 1898. Visitors to the museum will learn about the creation of the first American flag, as well as little-known facts about Betsy Ross and the life of colonial women.
Tours are available for adults ($7) or children ($6) and can be arranged for groups as well.
Liberty Bell
One of the most famous American symbols, the Liberty Bell is currently housed in its own museum, located at 6th and Market Streets. Admission is free of charge and includes the full Liberty Bell exhibit. At the end of the exhibit stands the Bell itself. And yes, photography is allowed.
