Under $100: Split, Croatia

Europe

You may have heard of the 4,000-year-old Greek-turned-Roman fortress town of Split, Croatia, with its white-sand beaches, crystal-clear water and low-cost fine dining. Split is Croatia’s biggest and best coastal city and averages about 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer.

Nestled just feet away from the waters edge, the 2,000-year-old Diocletian’s Palace is a sight to behold. With the area first being settled by the Greeks then the Romans, the town is now built into the former palace and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But, besides the rich melting pot of history and plethora of sun-kissed beaches, Split has so much to offer, without digging too deep into your wallet.

The currency, Kuna, is currently 6.17 to the U.S. dollar, so keep this in mind while we run through a list of attractions.

Take photos of Diocletian’s Palace. Seriously, it is truly something to behold. The white marble looks like it was installed yesterday. Also, this is a commonly filmed set location for Game of Thrones.

Go to St. Dominus’ Cathedral and the Bell Tower in the middle of the palace. Cost is 15 kuna, and it is a great sight. Climb to the adjacent, “Marjan Hil;” it is insanely gorgeous and provides the highest lookout point over Split. Also, it’s free.

Get a coffee one morning along the Riva promenade. Sip coffee while sitting shaded overlooking crystal-blue water. Coffee is around 10 kuna.

Consider a Clocktower pub crawl (towerpubcrawls.com).Check this killer pub crawl off the bucket list for 150 Kuna. Or, eat the best seafood in the world (in my opinion) at Fife, just off the Riva. Average entrée is only 65 kuna.

Food stands and fresh markets serve everything from American cuisine (burgers, pizza, fries) to wildly delish seafood snacks at food stands all over the city. Average cost of a pizza slice is 12 kuna.

You might be asking yourself, how do I get here? Both EuroAdventures (www.euroadventures.com ) and a secondary company called Bus2Alps (www.bus2alps ) run trips to this amazing slice of heaven.
